I Want A Brand New Computer

Honestly I never encounter this situation when I was a primary nor secondary student: "Awak, kenapa laptop I ade masalah cegini?", "Eh ape yang kte perlu tgk kalau nak beli laptop baru?", atau pown "Adi tolong teman aku beli laptop baru. Nanti aku blanja makan eh." Hehe. Blanja me makan sedap2 pls! Seriously even how geek I may looked like I'm not an expert. Based on my prior knowledge if you are trying to buy a new computer, this is what you may consider:

Price
Normally average laptop's price is around 3000-2000 MYR is enough for daily average use..(watching movies, office work, and web browsing; where as gaming, prefer 4000-3000 MYR)

Brand
Toshiba, Dell, Asus, Acer, HP....is what usually brands that gives not much of problems later for their users

Processor

  • Right now I do always prefer Intel rather than AMD eventhough AMD's computers offer better price compared to Intel's computers. Reason is AMD's processors produce so much heat compared to Intel's processors which later effect the performance of the computer. But if you are not a heavy user or you planning to have a good set of cooling system, then why not going for AMD.
  • Processor is the brain of your computer. The higher its clock (2.8GHz, 2.9GHz, 3.0GHz, etc) the faster it will process your programs. Right now the minimum specs for processors are dual cores.
  • Wonder what is the difference between dual cores, i3s, i5s, and i7s? Well dual cores is just basically 2 cores of processors combined physically to act as one processor. So you gonna have 1 processor that have the capabilities of 2 processors. i3 is the technology from Intel of making a single core processor that acts like two core processors. So it is just the same of having dual core processors. The difference is you physically only have 1 processor. Its amazing isn't it? Then comes i5 which have boost technology. Now this means that your i3 let say have 2.8GHz clock speed, with i5 it could turns out to be 3.1GHz clock speed. Now that is super!! Note that i5 is also a core with 2 cores capabilities. Then a some genius from Intel came up with i7 which make one core be as like quad-cores as reality. RAMPAGE!! OWNAGE!! ahahah...but do remind that the price ratio for i7 is comparably awful.

Memory
  • Now lets not be confused between memory and space. Space is the room you need to store your data permanently so you can retrieve it back (movies, music, files, etc). Where as memory is the room that your processor need to process the data. So it is really closely related to your computer's performance, where as space does not closely related to this.
  • So how much memory is enough? I'd do say now normally minimum 2GB. Better performance up to 4GB. Now remember not to over budget buying memory up to 6GB or whatever unless you really need it. Bcoz memory and processor both contribute to computers performance. Sometimes processor limits the memories and vice versa.
  • DDR2, DDR3? Well DDR3 is the newer, of course faster and better with higher price. I'm noob dun ask me more pls.
Space
Now I know large space computers are very tempting to buy. For example: "Wow this PC has 1TB space with only little diff with dis 320GB one leh!" Well for me it is a waste to pay more for larger space rather than pay more for better performance. Space around 300GB is enough for me, 500GB is still ok. Besides if you really need that space to store your movies, pictures, musics, animes, and *****s or ******s collections it is better for you to buy external space drives because you don't necessarily need to browse all of them at a time, do you?

Graphic
If you just wanna watch movies and play silly games, then integrated graphics is all you need. However if you would want to play some heavier games such as The Sims II or StarCraft II then it is recommended for you to have at least 500MB dedicated graphic memory. If you managed to have 1GB graphic memory, then go for it. If the sole purpose of having a computer is only for you to play DoTA, then 256MB is enough for that old engine game. 500MB for DoTA II. Not to forget if you plan to watch HD movies than you maybe will also need a 256MB graphic. Actually it is always better to have a little more graphic rather than not having one even if you only want to play silly games. Now almost all programs demand graphic performance. So having only 128MB graphic might helps.

Display
Go for widescreen. Better view for movies and games. Lol I've not much to say about this one. Sorry me nooby. Oh yeah..go for 13" or 14" if you want best view for your work and to ensure that your computer is still comparatively light. For me 15" is heavy which I would rather just put it in my home. Where as 10" and 12" really such a pain in the ass to do your work even though the weight is a bless.

Keyboard/touch pad/ USBs/LAN/wireless/Bluetooth/webcam/DVD/Blueray ROM
Somewhat not necessarily important in any different model. Just make sure that it is there and available to use.

OS
Well I'd say crap with the original OS. Just get some prirated copies from your friends. Same goes with other softwares. But do consider to have the original ones when you are responsible working adults. In mean time of reaching there, we students do love copying, plagiarism and pirating.

Summary
Price: around 2500 MYR
Brand: I prefer Dell or Asus
Processor: Intel i3 or i5
Memory: 2GB minimum
Space: no more that 500GB
Graphic: minimum recommendation 128MB, 500MB for gamers
Display: 13" for lighter weight, 14" for performance
OS: contact your friend to check whether they have pirated copies
